QR Codes

What is a QR Code?

Perhaps you have noticed a symbol like this popping up in businesses and on advertising all over town. It’s a technology that is coming on strong as smart phones continue to become more popular and affordable. It’s called a QR code, and it is a unique and quick way to transfer a lot of information instantly.

A QR code is a specific matrix barcode (or two-dimensional code), readable by dedicated QR Barcode readers and camera phones. The code consists of black modules arranged in a square pattern on a white background. The information encoded can be text, URL or other data.

It is very common in Japan, where it was created by Toyota subsidiary Denso-Wave in 1994. The QR code is one of the most popular types of two-dimensional barcodes. QR is the abbreviation for Quick Response, as the creator intended the code to allow its contents to be decoded at high speed.

So how can a business use QR Codes?

QR Codes can be used to display text to a user, to open a URL or to compose an email or text message. Merchants can use QR codes to direct customers to a website, map, coupons, club sign up form or landing page. The code can be in print, on your website or in a video. Customers just scan the symbol with their smart phone, and they are immediately taken to the website or displayed the text message. The possibilities using this technology are endless, and as the use of smart phones expands, they are only going to increase.
